The world-popular application for creating short videos TikTok apparently wants to "climb into the cabbage" of the YouTube video platform. Creators can now shoot videos up to 10 minutes long.

This is a really significant change, because until now creators could shoot a maximum of three-minute videos. Originally, however, the limit was only one minute, videos up to three times longer could be recorded only since last July.

We're not entirely sure if we can still call TikTok a short video app with a 10-minute maximum limit, but with the longer recording options now available to creators, users will now have a reason to spend even more time on the app. According to The Wall Street Journal, which refers to unnamed people close to the app's creator, ByteDance, TikTok earned $4 billion from advertising last year (over 89 billion crowns).

TikTok currently has over a billion monthly active users who receive short videos sent to their TikTok feed using an algorithm that matches users' interests with the subjects of the videos. If TikTok really wants to challenge YouTube with the new change, it still has a long way to go to approach the globally popular video platform in terms of advertising revenue. It earned 28,8 billion dollars (about 646 billion crowns) from advertising last year, i.e. more than seven times as much.
