Earlier last week, Samsung's GOS (Games Optimization Service) was found to be artificially slowing down apps. It reportedly throttles CPU and GPU performance for more than 10 apps, including titles like TikTok and Instagram. The company also issued an official statement on this.

The crucial thing about the whole case was that GOS did not slow down the benchmark applications. That's also why popular smartphone benchmarking service Geekbench has now confirmed that it's banning select Samsung phones from its platform due to this "throttling" of gaming apps. These are whole series Galaxy S10, S20, S21 and S22. Lines remain Galaxy Note a Galaxy And, because GOS doesn't seem to affect you in any way.

Geekbench also released a statement on its move: “GOS makes performance throttling decisions in applications based on their identifiers, not application behavior. We consider this a form of benchmark manipulation, as major benchmark applications, including Geekbench, are not slowed down by this service.”

Samsung responded to this controversy by stating that GOS is mainly used to keep devices from overheating. However, she confirmed that a software update will be released in the future that will add a "Performance Priority" option. If enabled, this option will force the system to prioritize peak performance over everything else, including heating and excessive battery drain. But Samsung is not the only one excluded by Geekbench. It has done this before with OnePlus smartphones, and for the same reason.

To complete the context, we attach a statement from Samsung:

"Our priority is to provide the best customer experience when using our mobile phones. Game Optimizing Service (GOS) was designed to help gaming applications achieve high performance while effectively managing device temperature. GOS does not adjust the performance of non-gaming applications. We value the feedback we receive about our products and after careful consideration, we plan to release a software update soon that will allow users to control the performance of gaming applications.”
