Cybersecurity company Hive Systems has released a report revealing how long it can take the average hacker to "crack" the passwords you use to protect your most important online accounts. For example, using numbers alone could allow an attacker to instantly discover your 4- to 11-character password.

Another interesting finding is that passwords with a length of 4-6 characters can be cracked instantly when using a combination of lowercase and uppercase letters. Passwords consisting of 7 characters can be guessed by hackers in as little as two seconds, while passwords with 8, 9, and 10 characters using both lower and uppercase letters can be cracked in two minutes, respectively. one hour or three days. Cracking an 11-character password that uses both upper and lower case letters can take an attacker up to 5 months.

Even if you combine uppercase and lowercase letters with numbers, using a password with only 4 to 6 characters is not secure at all. And if you were to "mix" symbols into this mixture, it would be possible to break a password with a length of 6 characters immediately. This is to say that your password should be as long as possible, and adding one extra letter can make all the difference in keeping your personal data secure.

For example, a 10-character password consisting of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers and symbols would take 5 months to solve, according to the report. Using the same letters, numbers, and symbols, it would take up to 11 years to crack an 34-character password. According to experts at Hive Systems, any online password should be at least 8 characters long and contain a combination of numbers, uppercase and lowercase letters, and symbols. One ideal example for all: cracking an 18-character password using the mentioned combination can take hackers up to 438 trillion years. So have you changed your passwords yet?
