In an ever-evolving world, it's important that apps keep us as fresh and up-to-date as possible informace. One way to do this is to provide content contributed by the users themselves. After all, this is also possible with Google Maps, but they are faced with quite extensive trolling.

Google released a rather interesting one press release, in which it informs how it deals with false content. It says it receives around 20 million posts every day from people using its Google Maps. These posts include everything from updated business hours and new phone numbers to their photos and reviews. As with any platform that accepts such content, Google must ensure that these are informace true.

Thanks to a combination of machine learning and human operators, the company is relatively successful in reducing the amount of content that is displayed as fraudulent on Maps. In fact, this is less than one percent of all content. Due to the pandemic, closed businesses and their reopening, Google received 30% more updated information last year than in 2020. Even so, its machine learning blocked 100 million of these edits because they contained certain falsehoods. Google also provides more accurate numbers directly:

  • Thanks to advances in technology, more than 7 million fake business profiles have been identified and removed – more than 630 of which have been reported directly by users.
  • 12 million attempts to create fake business profiles and nearly 8 million attempts to obtain business profiles that did not belong to the founding entities were stopped.
  • Thanks to the continuous improvement of machine learning technology and the company's employee teams have blocked more than 1 million user accounts for activities that violate the platform's policies, such as online vandalism or fraud.
  • More than 95 million reviews were blocked or removed in violation of the platform's policies, of which more than 60 thousand were removed due to cases related to COVID-19. More than a million reviews that were reported directly by users were also removed.
  • More than 190 million photos and 5 million videos that were blurry, low-quality, or violated content policies were blocked or removed.

It is definitely beneficial to see that not only smart algorithms but also real people are behind the present content available in Google Maps. It's also nice to know that Google really cares about the platform, so users can find the most relevant content on it informace. For a long time, Google Maps has not only been about turn-by-turn navigation.
