A major climate project wants to use your phone's GPS with the system Android to improve weather forecasting. After all, all our phones contain a number of sensors that do their job every day without us possibly knowing about it. You may have guessed that your phone has GPS and biometric sensors, but many smartphones also have a barometer to measure air pressure, and a few can also measure the temperature of the surrounding air.
The global climate project Camaliot aims for this data from the sensors of phones with the system Android linked to satellites to improve weather forecasting. It is funded by the European Space Agency (ESA) and the result is to improve the accuracy of weather forecasting. You can also become a part of the project, that is, if you have a device with at least the system Android version 7.0 or later and a phone with satellite navigation capability.
The device will then record informace from the sensors, but also the signal strength and the distance between individual satellites. Researchers believe that from these satellite signals they can get even more information about atmospheric conditions, such as changes in humidity, etc. This data will then be processed by machine learning to improve the forecast itself. Another goal is also the monitoring of ionospheric changes, which would help monitor space weather as well.
However, the project has even greater ambitions for the future. After all, if he gets into full swing, he could also collect informace from the sensors of devices connected to the Internet of Things. It is also available list more than 50 devices that fully support the platform. Not only Google Pixel, Xiaomi, Lenovo or Oppo devices are present, but of course also Samsung phones Galaxy.
