Japanese technology giant Sony began developing image sensors in 1996 and four years later launched its first sensor called the Sony IMX001. More than 20 years on, Sony controls almost half of the image sensor market, leaving Samsung far behind. Now the Japanese giant is working on a new sensor that will boast one "most". It will be the biggest in the world.

The new Sony sensor will have a resolution of 50 MPx and an optical format of 1/1.1 inches. It's quite possible that this is actually the mysterious Sony IMX8XX sensor that has been rumored for some time. The new sensor will reportedly be used by future flagships from Xiaomi, Vivo and Huawei.

Recall that one of Sony's current flagship sensors is the IMX766, which is currently installed in more than a hundred smartphones. Its optical format is 1/1.56 inch and the size of each pixel is 1.00 µm. The larger the sensor and pixel size, the more light it can capture. Samsung's current flagship sensor is the 200MPx ISOCELL HP1, which, however, is still awaiting deployment in practice. However, Sony is the largest supplier of image sensors for mobile cameras. Its share of this market last year was 45%. Samsung finished in second place with a share of 26%, and the first three largest players in this field are completed by Chinese OmniVision with a share of 11%.
