The US smartphone market is not the same as that of other regions of the world. While the Chinese brands Xiaomi, Oppo and Realme are doing well in Europe and Asia, they are not gaining much traction in the US. The clear leader is the home team Apple, closely followed by Samsung, which is trying to catch up, but simply can't keep up. While the first two positions seem to be old constants, the reborn Motorola also started to stick out its horns here.

According to the research company Counterpoint, this brand climbed to the third place of the best-selling smartphones in the US, and it held this position for the entire past year. While the company enjoyed quite a bit of success during its post-2000 heyday, this is the first time we've seen it start to gain traction in the modern smartphone era (and under Lenovo ownership). Additionally, the company has become the second best-selling entity in the budget phone segment ($400 and under), which hints at where this renewed success is coming from.

Motorola 2021

Apparently, the end of LG's smartphone division also has a big part to play in it. Smartphones of this company, despite their many problems that they have gone through over the years, have remained quite popular, because for a long time the brand belonged to the third place and at one time even directly fought with Samsung for the second place. After all, 2017 was a strange year, because iPhones experienced a sharp drop here, only to then skyrocket. They were also surpassed by Samsung models, which soon had to fight with LG for at least second place. Anyway, LG is gone, leaving a clear hole in the market that Motorola is trying to fill.

The Moto G series is seeing great success through prepaid channel offerings such as Verizon Prepaid, Metro by T-Mobile, Boost, and Cricket. The company still has a long way to go, but it is quite promising. At the end of 2021, it thus owned 10% of the American market, Samsung 22% and Apple a full 58%. It is unfortunately sad that Samsung was only able to improve by a single percent in 6 years, when it also had a downward trend towards the end of the year. Apple at the same time it increased by 21%.
