The Google Play Store saw a roughly one percent increase in the number of app downloads in the first quarter of this year. It was the most downloaded "app". Instagram. This was stated by Sensor Tower in its new report.

Sensor Tower writes in its report that the Google Play store recorded 28,3 billion individual app downloads in the first three months of this year. That's roughly 300 million more downloads than the same period last year. Just for comparison: Apple The App Store saw just 8,6 billion downloads in the same period.

The most downloaded application was the globally popular social platform Instagram, which recorded almost 130 million downloads. Facebook finished in second place with roughly 123 million downloads, and was third TikTok (less than 120 million downloads), the fourth Shopee (less than 100 million downloads) and the top five most downloaded applications is rounded off by another representative of Meta, a popular communication platform WhatsApp with just under 90 million downloads. The Sensor Tower report notes that across its store and Apple's, Google has lost its position as the top publisher for the first time since 2020 (replaced by the aforementioned Meta).

Mobile games remained the most popular category for downloads, growing more than 2% year-over-year to 12,03 billion downloads. The battle royale hit was the most downloaded game title ever Garena Free Fire with roughly 67 million downloads.
