Part of the recently released superstructure One UI 4.1 is a new smart widgets feature, officially called Smart Gadgets, which allow users to use multiple widgets in one on their phone and thus save space on the home screen. Now Samsung has started releasing this feature for tablets Galaxy with this version of the superstructure, including the current flagship series Galaxy Tab S8.

On the standard model Galaxy Tab S8 the smart widget item is at the top of the widget list. Unpacking reveals three sizes, namely 2x2, 4x1 and 4x2. The 2×2 widget cannot be resized, but the other two can be expanded to cover the entire width of the screen. A long press on the grouping will bring up all the available customization options for the current widget and allow you to remove it or add a new one. Just like on phones, widgets can be set to automatically rotate and show the most relevant informace.

As on phones, it is also possible to swipe left or right to scroll through the widgets, while the indicator at the bottom shows how many are available. Smart widgets are very practical on a tablet, but they are more useful on devices with smaller displays, i.e. phones. Even so, it is rather surprising that we have only seen them now.
