Analytical company Canalys has released a complete report on smartphone shipments for the first quarter of this year. The figures published in it show that Samsung remained at the top of the list, having delivered 73,7 million smartphones to the global market in the period in question and now holding a market share of 24%. In total, 311,2 million smartphones were shipped to the market, which is 11% less year-on-year.

He finished in second place Apple, which shipped 56,5 million smartphones and has a market share of 18%. It was followed by Xiaomi with 39,2 million smartphones shipped and a share of 13%, the fourth position was taken by Oppo with 29 million smartphones shipped and a share of 9%, and the top five smartphone players are rounded off by Vivo, which shipped 25,1 million of smartphones and now has a share of 8%.

The Chinese market suffered a significant decline in the first three months of this year, with Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo smartphone shipments down 20, 27 and 30% year-on-year respectively. Three factors in particular contributed to lower demand: component shortages, ongoing covid lockdowns and rising inflation. The only brand that did well during this period was Honor, which shipped 15 million smartphones and became number one in China.

The situation in Africa and the Middle East was not much better, in these markets Xiaomi's shipments fell by 30%. North America was the only market to experience growth in the past quarter, thanks to the success of the lines iPhone 13 to Galaxy S22. Canalys analysts expect an improvement in the situation in supply chains and a recovery in smartphone demand in the second half of the year.
