You probably know that Samsung is the biggest seller of smartphones. That the brand was founded in South Korea is also a well-known fact. But you may not know that it happened in March 1938, that the company started sugar production in 1953, and that the meaning of the name Samsung means "three stars". And we're just getting started.

Therefore, sugar production later moved under the CJ Corporation brand, however, the scope of the company was and still is quite broad. In 1965, Samsung also started running a daily newspaper, in 1969 Samsung Electronics was founded, and in 1982 Samsung founded a professional baseball team. Then in 1983, Samsung produced its first computer chip: a 64k DRAM chip. But this is where the interesting things just begin.

The Samsung logo has only changed three times

Following the pattern of the password: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it", Samsung sticks to the captive form of its logo, which has changed only three times in its history. In addition, the current form has been established since 1993. The logo itself up to that time contained not only the name, but also the three stars that this word describes. The very first Samsung business was established in the South Korean city of Daegu under the brand name Samsung Store, and its founder Lee Kun-Heem traded groceries there. Samsung City, as the company's complex is called, is located in Seoul.

Samsung had a smartphone long before the iPhone

Samsung is not the first to create a smartphone, but it was one of the first to get involved in this area. In 2001, for example, he introduced the first PDA phone with a color display. It was called the SPH-i300 and was exclusive to the American Sprint network. Its operating system was the then popular Palm OS. However, the company did not enter the electronics industry until 1970 with the launch of its first black-and-white television. It introduced the first phone in 1993, the first phone with Androidthen in 2009.

Samsung could buy Android, but he refused

Fred Vogelstein in his book Dogfight: How Apple and Google Went to War and Started a Revolution writes about how they were looking for founders at the end of 2004 Androidu money to sustain your startup. All eight members of the team behind Androidem flew to South Korea to meet with 20 Samsung executives. Here they presented their plans to create this completely new operating system for mobile phones.

However, according to co-founder Andy Rubin, Samsung representatives expressed considerable disbelief that such a small startup would be able to create such an operating system. Rubin added: "They laughed at us right in the boardroom." Just two weeks later, in early 2005, Rubin and his team drove to Google, which decided to buy the startup for $50 million. One has to wonder what would happen with Androidem would happen if Samsung actually bought it.

Samsung and Sony

Both make smartphones, both also make televisions. But Samsung already produced its first LCD screen in 1995, and ten years later the company became the world's largest producer of LCD panels. It overtook its Japanese rival Sony, which until then was the largest global brand of consumer electronics, and thus Samsung became part of the twenty largest global brands.

Sony, which did not invest in LCD, offered Samsung cooperation. In 2006, the company S-LCD was created as a combination of Samsung and Sony in order to ensure a constant supply of LCD panels for both manufacturers. S-LCD is 51% owned by Samsung and 49% by Sony, operating its factories and facilities in Tangjung, South Korea.

Burj Khalifa

It is the tallest skyscraper in the world, which was built between 2004 and 2010 in the city of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. And in case you didn't know who was involved in this build, yes, it was Samsung. So it wasn't exactly Samsung Electronics, but a subsidiary of Samsung C&T Corporation, i.e. the one that specializes in fashion, business and construction.

However, Samsung's construction brand was previously awarded a contract to build one of the two Petronas Towers in Malaysia, or the Taipei 101 tower in Taiwan. It is therefore a leading company in the field of construction.
