Samsung launched the world's first 512GB CXL DRAM memory module for servers. CXL stands for Compute Express Link and this new memory technology offers extremely high capacity with very low latency.

Exactly one year ago, Samsung became the first to introduce a prototype CXL DRAM module. Since then, the Korean tech giant has been working with data server and chip companies to standardize and improve the CXL DRAM standard. Samsung's new CXL module is built on the CXL driver ASIC (Application-Specific Integrated Circuit). Compared to the CXL module of the previous generation, it offers four times more memory capacity and one-fifth the system latency.

Brands such as Lenovo or Montage work with Samsung to integrate CXL modules into their systems. The CXL standard offers much higher capacity than conventional DDR memory systems and is also easier to scale and configure. It also provides better performance in areas such as AI, with really voluminous data, and will also find its use in metaverse. Last but not least, the new CXL module is the first to support the latest PCIe 5.0 interface and features an EDSFF (E3.S) form factor ideal for next-generation cloud and enterprise servers. Samsung will begin sending out samples of the module to customers and partners in the third quarter of this year, and it should be ready for deployment in next-generation platforms sometime next year.
