Sometimes it helps, sometimes it hinders, sometimes it's rather annoying. We are talking about predictive text input, formerly known as T9, and while it can save a lot of time when writing longer texts, on the other hand, if you mainly use slang words, it won't help much anyway and unnecessarily obscures other functions.

The T9 designation was out of the question. It was an abbreviation of the phrase "text on 9 keys", when this function made sense especially in the case of classic push-button telephones, which contained three or four letters under one key. When writing an SMS, the function predicted what you wanted to write and thus saved you not only time, but also the buttons themselves and actually even the thumbs on your hand.

With modern smartphones, the T9 function has changed more to predictive text input, because here we no longer have only 9 keys, but a full-fledged keyboard. But the function does the same thing, although of course its importance has already declined considerably, because the fingers of many users work faster and faster, and there is no need to use this prediction (Google's Gboard, however, learns, and can thus effectively predict what you want to write).

When using the Samsung keyboard, the predictive text is displayed above the number row. Just select the format of the suggested word here and click on it to insert it. Three dots on the right show more options, while an arrow on the left hides the menu. The ailment of the function is that its display obscures the functional elements. If you don't use the function in any way, you don't have to worry about turning it off.

How to turn off T9 or predictive text input

  • Go to Settings.
  • Scroll all the way down and select General administration.
  • Select a menu here Settings Samsung Keyboard.
  • Then turn off the option Predictive text input.

Expect emoji suggestions to stop showing up as well, as well as text correction suggestions. Both functions are tied to predictive text input. Of course, you can turn the function back on at any time.
