It's not very often that two really big companies work together in any way, rather than fight for a place in the market. But Samsung is very different in this. It cooperates not only with Microsoft on the interconnection of its devices with the platform Windows, but he is certainly no stranger to Google either. It was with him that he developed the platform Wear BONE.

They also collaborated to create the Health Connect platform and API, which provides developers with a set of tools for synchronizing user health data between apps and devices with the system Android. This should make it easier for users to track their health and fitness data across several different platforms.

More than 50 data types

Once a user logs in, developers can collect their fully encrypted health data (which will not be associated with the user in any way). Google says users will have full control over what data they share and with which apps. If the same type of data, such as step count, is collected by multiple apps, users can choose whether to share that data with one app or with others. The Health Connect app supports more than 50 types of data in a number of categories, including activity, body metrics, cycle tracking, nutrition, sleep and other vitals.

"We are working with Google and other partners to realize the full benefits and potential of Health Connect," TaeJong Jay Yang, executive vice president of Samsung, said in a press release. “I am excited to confirm that the Samsung Health platform will adopt Health Connect this year. With users' consent, application developers will be able to use accurate and optimized data measured on the watch Galaxy Watch for Samsung Health and use them in your apps as well.”

Availability by the end of the year

The Health Connect app is currently in open beta, so it's open to all developers. In addition to Samsung, Google is also working with app developers MyFitnessPal, Leap Fitness and Withings as part of the approach, as well as its own Fitbit app. So it looks like this news could be available around the time the Pixel watch is released Watch, probably in October of this year.

There are several advantages here, but more for Google than for Samsung. After all, he is trying to push users to use his services, but by sharing data between applications, users will be able to switch from one device to another without losing their data. This also applies to devices from other manufacturers. You can simply send data from Samsung Health to Health Connect and just log in to this application on another device. So it is definitely a friendly step towards the user.
