As you may recall, Samsung introduced a robotic exoskeleton called GEMS Hip at CES 2019. He did not say anything about its commercial availability at the time. Now a news has hit the airwaves that it will be launched during the summer of this year.

The GEMS Hip will go on sale in August, according to Korean website ET News, citing a component supplier. Samsung is said to be working now to get approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) by then. GEMS stands for Gait Enhancing & Motivating System and is an assistive robotic exoskeleton that the Korean tech giant claims reduces the metabolic cost of walking by 24% and increases walking speed by 14%. It could help people who have problems with motor functions.

At the moment, it is not clear how much the GEMS Hip will sell for, but what is clear is that Samsung wants to sell the device in the US market and that it wants to produce 50 thousand units to begin with. In the US, the market for assistive robots has been growing rapidly since 2016, by about a fifth on average each year.
