Samsung has been trying to catch up with its arch-rival in the field of semiconductor manufacturing, the Taiwanese giant TSMC, for some time. Last year, its semiconductor division Samsung Foundry announced that it would start producing 3nm chips in the middle of this year and 2025nm chips in 2. Now TSMC has also announced the production plan for its 3 and 2nm chips.

TSMC has revealed that it will begin mass production of its first 3nm chips (using N3 technology) in the second half of this year. Chips built on the new 3nm process are expected to be released early next year. The semiconductor colossus plans to start production of 2nm chips in 2025. In addition, TSMC will use GAA FET (Gate-All-Around Field-Effect Transistor) technology for its 2nm chips. Samsung will also use this, already for its 3nm chips, which it will start producing later this year. This technology is expected to bring significant improvements in energy efficiency.

TSMC's advanced manufacturing processes could be used by major technology players such as Apple, AMD, Nvidia or MediaTek. However, some of them could also use Samsung's foundries for some of their chips.
