The Swedish telecommunications company Ericsson (and a former big name in the field of classic phones) estimates that the number of users of 5G-enabled mobile devices will exceed one billion this year. This is largely due to the development of mobile 5G networks in China and North America.

Ericsson, which is one of the largest suppliers of telecommunications equipment in the world (along with China's Huawei and Finland's Nokia), said in a new report that the faltering global economy and events in Ukraine reduced the estimated number of users of 5G devices by about 100 million. Although their number increased by 70 million in the first quarter of this year to "plus or minus" 620 million, the number of users of 4G devices also increased by 70 million (to 4,9 billion) during the same period. According to Ericsson, the number of users of 4G devices will stagnate this year, and from next year it should start to decline due to the greater spread of users of 5G devices.

Ericsson had previously estimated that the number of users of 4G devices would peak as early as last year. However, the number of 5G device users will exceed one billion already this year, which means that the 5G network technology is developing much faster than the 4G generation. It took her 10 years to reach a billion users.

According to Ericsson, the rapid expansion of 5G networks is mainly due to the active adoption of the technology by mobile operators and the availability of cheap 5G smartphones with prices starting at $120. China and North America play a big role in its expansion. China added 270 million users of 5G devices last year, while the US and Canada added 65 million. India is also developing rapidly in this area, where Ericsson expects to have 30 million users of 5G devices this year and 80 million next year. The company otherwise estimates that 2027 billion people will be using 5G devices in 4,4.
