Less than a year after Samsung launched the world's first 200MPx photo sensor, has already introduced its second sensor with this resolution. It's called the ISOCELL HP3, and according to the Korean giant, it's the sensor with the smallest pixel size ever.

The ISOCELL HP3 is a photosensor with a resolution of 200 MPx, a size of 1/1,4" and a pixel size of 0,56 microns. For comparison, the ISOCELL HP1 is 1/1,22" in size and has 0,64μm pixels. Samsung claims that a 12% reduction in pixel size allows the new sensor to fit into more devices and that the module takes up 20% less space.

Samsung's latest 200MPx sensor is also capable of shooting 4K video at 120fps and 8K video at 30fps. Compared to the company's 108MPx sensors, its 200MPx sensors can record 8K videos with minimal field of view loss. In addition, the new sensor boasts a Super QPD autofocus mechanism. All the pixels in it have auto focus capability. It uses a single lens across four adjacent pixels to detect phase differences in both horizontal and vertical directions. This should result in faster and more accurate autofocus.

Thanks to pixel binning technology, the sensor is able to take 50MPx images with a pixel size of 1,12μm (2x2 mode) or 12,5MPx photos (4x4 mode). It also supports 14-bit photos with up to 4 trillion colors. According to Samsung, samples of the new sensor are already available for testing, with mass production expected to begin later this year. What kind of smartphone it could debut in is not known at the moment (though it probably won't be a Samsung phone).
