Foldable smartphones are quickly making their way into the mainstream. Although they are still a bit more expensive than regular smartphones, they have come a long way in a short time and are growing in popularity. Even Google knows this, which, although it does not yet have its own "puzzle" (according to the latest unofficial reports, it will not be introduced until next year), has begun to support this form factor (and large displays in general) through the system Android 12L. Now it has come to light that it has started making the split keyboard feature available in the Gboard app for beta testers.

If you're signed up to the beta program and apply the new update, you should be able to access the new Gboard layout, which splits the keyboard into two parts. This will allow users with wider screens to reach all the keys more easily. This saves them "finger gymnastics", because now all the keys should be within reach of their thumbs.

The G and V keys, located in the usual layout in the middle, are doubled so you can choose to press them on one side or the other. If you're switching between the external and internal displays, Gboard will know and automatically adjust the layout accordingly (so the keyboard will be unsplit on the external display). We already have a split keyboard in Gboard previously saw. However, back then it was only possible to access it by rooting. Now the feature is officially available in beta for anyone to try, and it shouldn't be long before it "flips" into the live version.
