Former employees of a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics have been sentenced to 18 months in prison for leaking information to a Chinese company. This company leaked informace used to develop semiconductor manufacturing technologies in a new factory it built specifically for this purpose. The website informed about it Business Korea.

The convicted employees worked for SEMES, which belongs to the most important division of Samsung Samsung Electronics, for more than ten years. According to the Seoul Central District Court, the former employees allegedly stole the technology needed to manufacture 14 semiconductor cleaners between March 2018 and December last year. The equipment was sold to a Chinese company for 71 billion won (roughly CZK 1,3 billion).

The Chinese company used 14 semiconductor cleaners to remove contaminants in the semiconductor substrate patterning process at its new factory in Cheonan, Korea. The name of the company and the number of former employees of SEMES were not published.

SEMES is a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics for the production of chip devices. It was very successful last year, with sales reaching 3,12 trillion won (CZK 56,16 billion) and a profit of 353,3 billion won (CZK 6,36 billion). Until about mid-2010, it mainly focused on the production of semiconductor cleaners, but due to increased demand, it has recently focused on the production of etching equipment.
