Foldable smartphones are the future of the mobile market. At least that's what Samsung wants to believe. In recent years, the company has been intensively promoting its line Galaxy Z, represented by the Fold and Flip models. The manufacturer reportedly killed its line Galaxy Note just in favor of folding devices. However, his efforts are bearing fruit, because in 2021 this Korean giant has already delivered 10 million flexible devices to the market. However, he has even bigger goals.

Samsung currently he said, that it expects puzzle pieces to make up more than 2025% of its premium smartphone shipments by 50. At least that's what TM Roh, the head of the mobile division, said at a press conference in New York after the launch of the phones Galaxy From Flip4 and Fold4. According to The Korea Herald, Roh told reporters that "by 2025, foldable phones will account for more than 50% of Samsung's total premium smartphone shipments".

The new standard

He further stated that foldable devices will become the new smartphone standard. For that to happen, Samsung's foldable devices would have to surpass its flagship line within the next three years Galaxy S. Consumer interest in it has been declining in recent years, and the company is losing ground to Apple in the premium segment. However, this is easier said than done, especially given the high price of current foldable phones.

The foldable smartphone market is expected to grow rapidly in the coming years. Counterpoint analyst Jene Park estimates that 16 million foldable smartphones will be shipped this year and 2023 million in 26. As for Samsung, analysts expect the Korean giant to ship around 9 million smartphones in the rest of this year Galaxy Of the Fold4 and Flip4, which is an increase over last year's shipments of 7,1 million units of the 3rd generation of these folding devices.

Selling more flexible smartphones is also good for the company's bottom line, as their high price translates into higher ASP (Average Selling Price) and fatter profit margins. Since foldable smartphones are still in the early stages of development, Samsung does not face much competition in this segment. This is what Huawei, Oppo, Xiaomi and other Chinese manufacturers are trying to achieve, but they tend to focus only on the local market. However, in order for the Korean company to achieve its optimistic goal of shipping at least 2025% of foldable devices in the premium smartphone segment by 50, it will have to do a lot more than just minor updates to its two models as it has done now.
