Xiaomi unveiled its new flexible phone, the Mix Fold 2, just a day after Samsung launched it Galaxy From Fold4. It is a direct competitor to the new flagship puzzle of the Korean giant. Even if directly comparison of both phones, the Mix Fold 2 performed a little worse, in one area it has the upper hand over the fourth Fold.

The Mix Fold 2 uses a drop-shaped hinge, which allowed Xiaomi to significantly slim down its body. When closed, the device is 11,2 mm thick, when unfolded it is only 5,4 mm (it is 4-14,2 mm and 15,8 mm for the Fold6,3). The joint solved in this way also helps to reduce the visibility of the crease. Samsung tested a similar design, but had a good reason for not using it in the end.

The Korean giant was the first to bring water resistance to flexible phones. Last year's "benders" were the first to specifically boast about it Galaxy Z Fold3 and Z Flip3. Understandably, the company wanted to maintain this level of durability for this year's models as well.

During SamMobile's conversation with the head of Display Supply Chain Consultants, Ross Young, it emerged that Samsung tested various hinge designs, including one that is similar to the Mix Fold 2's "teardrop" hinge. Despite the above advantages, it ultimately decided not to use it in the new Fold because what it lacks is water resistance. Samsung prefers that all devices Galaxy priced at over $1, it was water resistant, except for tablets.

We have no doubt that Samsung will continue to test new hinge designs and that it will one day manage to come up with one that doesn't have to choose between water resistance and a slim body/less visible crease. In any case, the last two generations of the Fold show how the Korean giant can brilliantly balance form and function.
