It's not something that most users encounter too often, but moving the device with the system Wear OS from one phone to another is, without exaggeration, a pain. There is no mechanism to transfer the watch from the old smartphone to the new one - you can just reset it and set it up from scratch. Google Play Services app dissection performed by the website XDA Developers now revealed that Google is working on a way to streamline the process. It may soon be possible to back up and restore data from Wear BONE.

XDA Developers has discovered that the Google Play Services beta version 22.32.12 contains a number of references to backups of wearable devices. The feature is obviously in the early stages of development, as there are also several new related designs that are currently empty. The newly discovered strings also show that backups Wear The OSes will be marked as a Google One feature, so it's likely to be a similar process to backing up your phone using this feature.

A watch Galaxy Watch running on Wear The OS already offers data backup and recovery, but this is a Samsung feature, not a Google feature. The feature doesn't back up apps downloaded through the Google Play Store or device settings related to those apps, so it won't help much if you rely on a lot of Google services on your watch.

At this point, it's unclear what exactly this new feature will back up, or how smooth the process of restoring data from the cloud to the watch will be. With any luck, moving your watch with Wear The OS from one phone to another is a little shorter and easier. It's also important to keep in mind that, as with most new features that are discovered from app teardowns, it may take some time for these to see the light of day.
