Scrolling through your social media feeds, it's not uncommon to come across tiktok posts cross-posted on Instagram as Reels (before everything eventually ends up on YouTube). Sure, you may have already seen the creator's work on their original platform, but in general, users don't seem to mind cross-posting. Developers are a different story, and we've seen attempts before to watermark videos to discourage users from the practice. Unlike TikTok, YouTube has not yet watermarked shorts, but that is changing now.

Na page of YouTube support, Google says that the watermark will be added to short videos that creators download from their accounts before sharing them on other platforms. The new feature has already appeared in the desktop version, the mobile version should arrive in the coming months.

Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and other platforms have long struggled to curate original short video content, mostly because creators creating videos for one platform want to reach as many viewers as possible, which means posting on multiple platforms. Platforms like TikTok have a well-implemented watermarking system to discourage users from this practice and direct views back to the original source of their favorite content. This distinctive logo can be easily cropped and removed. It also shows the creator's feel for the platform, so if a video is downloaded and shared, viewers can easily find the original version on TikTok. A watermark for original Shorts content could serve a similar purpose.
