Competition is important across any sales segment. Thanks to it, companies fight with each other for customers, and they usually ideally balance the prices and capabilities of their product so that it is comparable to the competition. As the largest phone manufacturer in the world, Samsung has really great competition, but in one industry it has practically zero competition. We are talking about foldable smartphones. But does it matter?

Being the world's largest smartphone seller by volume, Samsung faces a very competitive environment. In the low-end and mid-range segments, it faces a host of Chinese OEMs in lucrative emerging markets around the world. In the flagship segment, Apple's iPhones remain its biggest competitors for a long time. But Apple's somewhat closed-garden approach makes it very difficult for people in its ecosystem to switch to another platform.

A clear leader

However, there is one segment in which Samsung has practically had no competition for three years. These are folding phones, when original Galaxy The Fold came out in 2019, and although it was basically the realization of a concept, it had no alternative on the market from another manufacturer. In 2020, Samsung came up with models Galaxy From Fold2 a Galaxy Z Flip, when the latter practically defines a folding phone in the "clamshell" form factor. They came the following year Galaxy From Fold3 a Galaxy From Flip3, again with no real threat from the competition. Motorola did have its Razr, but it fell short in so many areas that it's not even a fair comparison.

But that doesn't mean that no one else is making foldable smartphones. Popular Chinese manufacturers such as Huawei, Oppo, Xiaomi and others have tried and are still trying to make foldable smartphones. Motorola unveiled its new Razr model just days after Samsung unveiled it earlier this month Galaxy From Flip4. The Mix Fold 2 model from Xiaomi then tries to match Galaxy From the Fold4, but that's just wishful thinking on Xiaomi's part. Huawei is also trying hard in our market. But the company pays not only for the exorbitant price of its phones, but also for permanent sanctions that prohibit companies from using Google and 5G functions.

Chinese manufacturers are also unable to achieve the production volume that Samsung brought its foldable device to markets around the world. As a result, while potential challengers have emerged, Samsung has not faced any real competition since the launch of foldable phones in 2019. Many assume that Samsung will eventually relent, because why would it feel the need to push in the jigsaw puzzle area when it knows that no one can threaten it? But these fears are unfounded.

The future of smartphones

How the company's foldable smartphones have evolved in just three years, despite facing no competition, is enough proof that the company will not back down from its efforts. He could dispel all these doubts already Galaxy From Fold2 and by the way i Galaxy From Flip. Their third generation then showed that Samsung is really serious about this category, which the 4th generation definitely confirmed. Samsung is constantly trying to develop its foldable phones because it realizes that this "form" is the future of smartphones.

In the coming years, we will see foldable smartphones gaining momentum. In addition, Samsung may extend its folding technology to tablets as well, which could restart their declining trend. In addition, the company has a clear goal - to prove that foldable smartphones will account for 2025% of all flagship phone sales by 50. However, given the pace at which sales of this segment are growing worldwide, this is not entirely out of the question.
