Yes, we are serious about the title. Indeed, Samsung has developed a potentially revolutionary home toilet in collaboration with Bill Gates, or rather the Bill Gates and Melinda Gates Foundation. This is a response to the Reinvent the Toilet challenge.

The prototype of a home safe toilet was developed by the research and development division of the Korean giant Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology (SAIT) in cooperation with the Bill Gates and Melinda Gates Foundation. This is a response to the Reinvent the Toilet challenge, which the foundation announced back in 2011.

SAIT began work on the potentially revolutionary toilet in 2019. It recently completed the development of the core technologies and its prototype has now begun testing. The division spent three years researching and developing the basic design. It has also developed modular and component technology. Thanks to this, the successful prototype can undergo tests these days. SAIT has developed core technologies related to heat treatment and bioprocesses that kill pathogens from human waste and also make liquid and solid waste environmentally safe. Through this system, treated water is fully recycled, solid waste is dried and incinerated to ash, and liquid waste goes through a biological treatment process.

Once the toilet is on the market, Samsung will license patents related to the project for free to partners in developing countries, and will continue to work with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to ensure mass series production of these technologies. Access to safe sanitation facilities remains one of the main problems of developing countries. The World Health Organization and UNICEF estimate that over 3,6 billion people do not have access to safe facilities. As a result, half a million children under the age of five die each year from diarrheal diseases. And that's exactly what the new toilet is supposed to help solve.
