The Google Play Store has noticeably reduced the number of available apps since the beginning of this year. According to data published by Sports Lens, over a million apps were removed from it in the first half of the year. This is the second largest decrease since 2018.

Over the years, the Google Play Store has seen a large increase in the number of applications. According to data from The Statista and Appfigures websites, users Androidu could choose from 2020 million apps in 3,1. By the middle of the following year, that number had risen to 3,8 million. In December, 4,7 million apps were available in the store, the most in history so far.

However, to ensure the quality and trustworthiness of apps, Google has implemented a number of rules to regulate their developers. As a result, it regularly removes thousands of low-quality apps that violate its policies.

Statistics show that the US tech giant removed 1,3 million apps from its store in the first quarter of this year alone, bringing the number of apps down to 3,3 million. However, the negative trend stopped in the second quarter, when the number of "apps" increased to 3,5 million. For comparison: the number of applications in Apple's App Store rose from 2 to almost 2,2 million in the first half of the year. This number can be expected to grow even more sharply after September, when will it come out iOS 16. This will include the possibility of personalizing the lock screen, and it can be expected that the developers will want to make a living from it, because Apple he gave them an API to do so.

In addition to reducing the number of apps, Google Play also saw fewer downloads and lower revenue in the period under review. According to websites Statista and Sensor Tower, consumer spending on in-app purchases, subscriptions and premium apps reached $21,3 billion (roughly CZK 521,4 billion) in the first half of the year, which is 7% less than the same period last year. The store also saw 55,3 billion downloads from January to June, down 700 million year-over-year. Again for comparison: Apple's store revenue reached $43,7 billion (about 1,07 trillion CZK), which is 5,5% more year-on-year, and the number of downloads fell by 400 million to 16 billion.
