When viewing content, typically videos or the web, you can change the display mode from landscape to portrait and vice versa. You can find the toggle in the quick settings panel, but it depends on which view you're currently in and the layout will lock accordingly.

It is therefore a different situation than, for example, in the case of iPhones and iOS. There you can only lock rotation in portrait mode. Android but it is significantly more open and therefore also offers more options. That way, you won't have your video scaled down, or your website or photo switch to portrait mode when you don't want it to.

Auto-rotate is turned on by default on your device. This means that the display automatically rotates according to how you handle your phone or tablet. When you disable it, you will lock the view in Portrait or Landscape mode. If for some reason the following procedure doesn't work for you, check for any updates that might fix this error (Settings -> Software Update -> Download and Install) or restart your device.

How to set display rotation to Androidu

  • Swipe the display with two fingers from the top edge downwards (or 2 times with one finger).
  • When auto-rotate is enabled, the feature icon is colored to indicate its activation. If Auto-Rotate is disabled, you'll see a gray icon and the text Portrait or Landscape here, indicating the state in which you disabled the feature.
  • If you turn on the function, the device will rotate the display automatically according to how you hold it. If you turn off the function when holding the phone vertically, the display will remain in Portrait mode, if you do so while holding the phone horizontally, the display will be locked to landscape.

If you can't find the screen rotation icon in the quick settings panel, you may have deleted it by mistake. To add the rotate screen back icon, tap the three vertical dots at the top right and select Edit Buttons. Look for the function here, hold your finger on it and then move it to the desired place among the icons below. Then just tap Done.

Temporary lock by holding your finger

Even if you have auto-rotation enabled, you can block it without visiting the quick settings panel. E.g. when reading a PDF that has a different page layout each time, and you don't want the screen to keep changing, hold pst on the display. In this case, the screen will remain unchanged. Then, as soon as you lift your finger, the display will rotate according to how you are currently holding the device.
