Social or communication platforms have expanded significantly in recent years. The reason is simple – they are offered for free. However, some popular platforms, such as Telegram or Snapchat, have already started to come with paid features. And it seems that Meta (formerly Facebook) wants to go in this direction with its Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp applications.

As the website reports The Verge, Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp might get some special features that would be unlocked only after you pay for them. According to the site, Meta has already created a new division called New Monetization Experiences, whose sole purpose is to develop paid features for the social giant's apps.

To put things into perspective, Facebook and Instagram already offer paid features, but they are primarily intended for creators. These are, for example, paid events, various subscription products, or Facebook's Stars function, which enables the monetization of audio and video content. What The Verge is writing about seems to have nothing to do with these features. However, the site doesn't even hint at what kind of paid features Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp might come with in the future.

In any case, Facebook would have a good reason for introducing new paid features. Version iOS 14.5, released last year, came with a fundamental change in the area of user privacy, which consisted in the fact that every application, including those from Meta, must ask the user for permission to monitor their activity (not only when using the application, but across the Internet ). According to various surveys, only a few percent of iPhone and iPad users have done so, so Meta is losing a lot of money here, since its business is practically built on user tracking (and subsequent ad targeting). Therefore, even if the given functions are paid for, the core of the applications will still remain free.
