Last year, Google launched the function of ecological routes in the mobile version of Maps. At first it was only available in the USA and Canada, it arrived in Germany in August and is now heading to several dozen other European countries, including the Czech Republic.

The eco-routes feature in Maps is coming to almost 40 European countries, including the Czech Republic, Poland, France, Spain, Great Britain and Ireland, but not all countries have been disclosed by Google. It should be made available in the coming weeks.

The feature, better known as the eco-routes navigation mode, offers drivers the most economical route, even if it means the journey will take longer. The mode takes into account hills, traffic, toll gates and other stops to provide drivers with a constant speed and calculate fuel savings. Drivers can also choose the type of vehicle they drive – whether petrol, diesel, hybrid or electric.

The system is built on feedback from the European Environment Agency and combined with Google-created machine learning models for the most popular engines in given regions. This means that some fossil fuel cars may be rerouted through highways, while electric cars may receive proposals for flat-surfaced streets for better energy recovery.
