Last year, Samsung started a new era of its smart watches. It got rid of the Tizen operating system and switched to Wear OS. And it was a really beneficial move because Galaxy Watch4 were simply great. But now we have here Galaxy Watch5 to Watch5 Pro, when the Pro model is the more interesting and equipped one.

Even this year, Samsung launched two models, the basic ones Galaxy Watch5 added Galaxy Watch5 Pro, not Classic as it was in the past. Samsung switched to the new branding to show the focus of its higher-end model. Even though it has a classic design and classic features, it can handle a whole working day nicely under your shirt, as well as an active weekend on mountain hikes.

Samsung has worked on materials, functions and, above all, durability, which is criticized most often for smart watches. Galaxy Watch5 Pros are practically without compromises, although there are still a few criticisms to be found.

The design is classic and rather settled

Samsung didn't budge. In appearance, they are Galaxy Watch5 For very similar Galaxy Watch4 Classic, although of course they differ in certain details. The main one is the absence of a mechanical rotating bezel, there is no longer raised material between the buttons and the case is much higher. The diameter also changed, paradoxically downwards, i.e. from 46 to 45 mm. In the case of a new item, there is no other size to choose from. Thanks to the absence of a bezel, which is mainly used on sports (diving) watches, they actually have Watch5 For a more formal look. The grayish titanium does not catch the eye like shiny steel (a black finish is also available). The only thing that can be a bit irritating is the red lining of the top button.

The case is made of titanium and you probably don't need to wish for anything more. The use of this luxurious material ensures the durability of the watch, but the question is whether it is not an unnecessary waste of resources and an artificial increase in price. We know that the competition in the form of Garmin, or even in the area of more stupid solutions for Casio watches, can make very durable cases even without noble materials (resin with carbon fibers). Then we have, for example, bioceramics, which is dealt with by the company Swatch. Personally, I would just see it the other way around - use titanium in the basic line, which is primarily intended to be elegant, and I would use lightweight materials in the Pro model. But these are just my preferences, with which neither Samsung nor Apple.

Anyway, the watch itself is really durable, as it has the IP68 standard as well as the MIL-STD-810G certification. The display is then fitted with sapphire glass, so we actually reach the limit, because only diamond is harder. Perhaps that's why Samsung could get rid of the unnecessary frame around the display, which goes beyond it and tries to cover it. Since we already have the sapphire here, this is perhaps unnecessarily cautious, and the watch is therefore taller and heavier.

No bezel and controversial strap

There was a lot of crying when it was confirmed that Galaxy WatchThe 5 Pro will not have a mechanical rotating bezel. And you know what? It doesn't really matter. You simply approach the watch as if it doesn't have this feature, and you don't do anything about it. Either you put up with it or you keep using it Watch4 Classic. But I can say from personal use that you get used to it very quickly. Just for all the positives Watch5 You can easily forgive that one negative. Even if the bezel is replaced by gestures on the display, you won't want to use them much. They are quite inaccurate and far too fast. Your finger simply doesn't click on the display the way the bezel did.

The second major design change is a completely different strap. Although it is still 20 mm, it still contains speed rails and is still "the same" silicone, however, it contains a butterfly clasp instead of a classic buckle. Samsung's rationale for this is that even if the clasp comes loose, the watch won't fall off because it's still hugging your hand.

I would not see such a fundamental advantage in this, because the magnet is very strong and will not come off by accident. But this system gives you the freedom to set your ideal length. So you are not dependent on some hole spacing, but you can set how comfortable the watch is for you with absolute precision. Here, too, the entire mechanism is made of titanium.

There was a case on the Internet about how it is impossible to charge the watch on wireless chargers because of the strap. But it's not too difficult to unfasten one side of the strap from the case and place the watch on the charger, if you don't want to mess with the length setting. It's more of a sensationalism than a negative. Samsung's reaction in the event of a rush with a special stand is rather laughable.

Same performance, new system

Galaxy Watch5 Pro have basically the same "guts" as Galaxy Watch4. So they are powered by Exynos W920 chipset (Dual-Core 1,18GHz) and coupled with 1,5GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. Does it bother you? No, due to the chip crisis, but due to the Pro designation, one might think that such a solution would at least have more RAM and storage than normal Galaxy Watch5.

But the software and hardware are in perfect harmony here and everything runs as you expect - briskly and without problems. All the functions that the watch can do, and that you run on it, run without delay. The increase in performance would therefore be only artificial (as he likes to do, after all Apple) and rather with regard to the future, when after years they may slow down after all. But it doesn't have to either, because we can't say for sure yet.

One UI Watch4.5 brings new features and more customization options. For the best possible user experience, the watch should of course be used with phones Galaxy, although they can be paired with any device running the system Android version 8.0 or higher. System support iOS missing, just like it was with the previous generation. Even though we already know that Wear OS with iOS can communicate, Samsung simply doesn't want that for its watches.

Also new to the system are new keyboard inputs to make typing easier. While one could say that this is indeed true, it begs the question of why you would want to type any text at all on a 1,4-inch display and not reach for a mobile phone instead. But if you want to answer quickly and differently than predefined answers, then ok, the option is simply here and it's up to you if you use it. If you've been using a Samsung smartwatch for some time now, you'll be in the interface Galaxy Watch5 To feel at home. But if it's your first time, the controls are very intuitive and easy to understand, so there's nothing to worry about.

Great and bright display

The 1,4" Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 450 x 450 pixels is simply great and it's hard to ask for more. So, of course, you can ask for a bigger display, but that's a point of view, if it would be necessary to rush to some size of 49 mm, as he did now Apple at theirs Apple Watch Ultra. Going back to the sapphire, Samsung says it's 60% harder compared to the Gorilla Glass found in previous models. So you shouldn't be afraid of any damage.

Of course, new dials are also linked to the display. Although not many have been added, you will especially love the Professional analog. It does not contain a plethora of complications, it does not overwhelm you informaceme and it just looks fresh. Even this time, however, it must be noted that the playfulness of the dials Apple Watch those of Samsung are simply not up to par.

Health first and fitness features

The watch has all the same sensors as the Galaxy Watch4, and thus provide heart rate monitoring, EKG, blood pressure monitoring, body composition, sleep monitoring and blood oxygen monitoring. However, Samsung said that its sensor lineup has been greatly improved. To be honest, the biggest change is that their module comes out of the pumpkin of the watch, so it sinks more into your wrist and therefore also captures individual data better. But sometimes just a little can be enough.

The only major, big and unnecessary novelty is the infrared temperature sensor, which does nothing. Well, at least for now. However, developers also have access to it, so maybe you just have to wait a while and miracles will happen. Or not, and we won't see him in the next generation. Everyone would like to measure their body temperature in real time, but it is more complicated than it sounds, and there are obviously many problems with the ideal tuning of such functionality.

However, the watch can also monitor your sleep and detect possible snoring. All, of course, in close cooperation with the Samsung Health application, which will provide you with the most comprehensive information about your sleep, if you don't know in the morning if you slept well or not. Logically, there is also a division of the individual phases of your sleep, with the fact that here you can see the total snoring times and records of individual times. You can even play it back as you can find a recording here - that's what Samsung says, I can't confirm or deny it as I don't snore luckily.

Track Back, i.e. following your path, when you always return to the path you walked/ran/drove on if you got lost, is useful, but relatively little usable. However, it can be useful, for example, if you go for a leisurely run on vacation, in an unfamiliar environment and without a phone. The feature ensures that you always return to the place where you started the activity. The ability to load GPX files for route navigation might also be a welcome addition, but the creation process is quite tedious. But professionals will clearly miss personalized workouts like Garmin's solution, as well as recommendations based on your activity and a Body Battery indicator. Maybe next time.

The most important thing – battery life

Samsung wanted them to be Galaxy Watch5 For a watch that you can take with you on your several-day outdoor adventures and not worry about its battery. That's also why they have the one with a capacity of 590 mAh, which ensures a really impressive endurance. It can even be said that the endurance itself exceeded many expectations. Samsung itself says the Pro's battery is 60% larger than the case Galaxy Watch4.

We all use our devices differently, so of course your battery experience will vary based on your activities, duration and number of notifications you receive. Samsung claims 3 days or 24 hours for GPS. If you were wondering how they are doing Apple Watch Ultra, yes Apple "boasts" its longest staying power ever, which is 36 hours. There is nothing to solve here just based on paper values.

S Galaxy Watch5 You can give two days without any problems or restrictions. That is, if you track your sleep and perform an hourly activity with GPS on both days. In addition to this, of course, there are all the notifications, some measurement of body values, the use of several applications, and even simply lighting up the display when you move your hand. This is also the case with Always On – if you turn it off, you can easily get to the stated three days. But if you are undemanding, you can do it even for four days, when you don't have frmol and you don't get one notification after another.

If you're worried about the battery life of your smartwatch, if you forget to charge it every day, and if you want to know that you'll still make it the next day, it's Galaxy Watch5 For a clear choice to calm your fears. If you're used to charging your smartwatch every day, you'll probably do it here, too. But the point here is that if you forget, nothing will happen. It's also about the fact that when you go on a weekend away from civilization, the watch will take those hikes with you without running out of juice. That's the advantage of the giant battery - getting rid of worries. 8 minutes of charging will then ensure sleep tracking for 8 hours, compared to Galaxy Watch4, charging is also 30% faster, which is important considering the larger battery capacity.

A clear verdict and an acceptable price

Recommend Galaxy Watch5 For or discourage them? According to the previous text, the verdict will probably be clear to you. This is Samsung's best smartwatch to date. Their same chip with the previous generation does not matter, you either get used to the strap or you can easily replace it at home, you will appreciate the titanium case, as well as the sapphire glass and long durability.

Galaxy Watch5 Pro have the advantage that they have no competition yet. Apple Watch they only go with iPhones, so it's a different world. Google Pixel Watch they won't arrive until October and it's even a question of whether it's worth waiting for them, especially if you own the phone Galaxy. The interconnectedness of Samsung products is exemplary. The only real competition may be Garmin's portfolio, but one can still argue about whether its solutions are really smart. However, if you look at the Fénix line, for example, the price is actually quite different (higher).

Samsung Galaxy WatchThe 5 Pro is not a cheap smartwatch, but compared to solutions from other manufacturers, it is not the most expensive either. They are cheaper than Apple Watch Series 8 (from 12 CZK), ex Apple Watch Ultra (CZK 24) and are even cheaper than many Garmin models. Their price starts at 990 CZK for the regular version and ends at 11 CZK for the LTE version.
