When Samsung introduced Galaxy Watch4, it was a big design and software step that simply worked. Much was expected from this year's generation, but it was already clear in advance that what happened a year ago would not be repeated. Galaxy Watch5 thus follow in the footsteps of their predecessors and only improve what already works great.

Galaxy Watch5 are quite difficult to review for several reasons - after all, they are very much the same as their previous generation and are clearly overshadowed by their sibling in the form of Galaxy Watch5 Pros, which are after all more interesting in many ways. But because they are also significantly more expensive, they have Galaxy Watch5 clear prerequisites for success.

Design without major changes

Samsung once again bet on an aluminum case for its basic series. It should be added, however, that the aluminum only forms the sides with legs for attaching the strap. But the display blends beautifully into the rest of the body and visually enlarges it nicely. We have two case sizes – 40 and 44 mm, where you can have the first in graphite, rose gold and silver, and the second in graphite, sapphire blue and silver. The dimensions are 39,3 x 40,4 x 9,8 mm, i.e. 43,3 x 44,4 x 9,8 mm, and the weights are 28,7 g and 33,5 g, respectively.

We tested the smaller variant called 40 mm, which is ideal for women's wrists. But I must say that even though the watch is overall smaller, it does not detract from the quality of the display. They are very comfortable to operate, and they are also really decent. It's clear that men tend to reach for the larger version, but ladies definitely don't have to worry about the smaller one.

The display is first class

Even though the case is aluminum and the Pro model is titanium, this premium material would not make much sense here. On the other hand, the use of sapphire glass is certainly an advantage, because you do not need to worry about a scratch. The smaller version has a 1,2" display with a resolution of 396 x 396 pixels, the larger version has a 1,4" display with a resolution of 450 x 450 pixels (which is also available in Galaxy Watch5 Pro). The display is of the Super AMOLED type and does not lack Always On. You can then use new dials on the display, even the Professional analog one, with which the Pro model is presented in particular.

Of course, the bezel from the Classic model is missing, as is the raised case of the Pro model. The display is beautifully straight and the case does not exceed it in any way. Thanks to this, it creates a very elegant impression, which is simply liked even after a year and will be liked for another year as well. The strap is pretty soft and very comfortable. The buckle is easy to fasten and the hidden end of the strap does not pull the hair on your hands.

The performance is the same

Galaxy Watch5 have the same chip as Galaxy Watch4. So they are powered by Exynos W920 (Dual-Core 1,18GHz) and coupled with 1,5GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage, which they actually have in common with the model Watch5 For. In terms of functions, it doesn't really differ from it, with the higher range you pay mainly for the materials used and greater durability. So everything works as you expect - reactions are quick and without waiting, animations are effective, there are no delays.

The watch can be paired with any device with the system Android version 8.0 or higher, but of course they are best complemented by phones Galaxy. You can't enjoy them with iPhones. One UI Watch4.5 brings new features like new keyboard inputs to make typing easier. If you've been using a Samsung smartwatch for some time now, you'll be in the interface Galaxy Watch5 with One UI Watch4.5 feel at home. But if it's your first time, don't worry. After one day you will know everything important.

The battery jumped

According to Samsung, the battery Galaxy Watch5 jumped by 13% compared to the previous generation, while faster 10W Qi charging is also present. Thanks to this, you can track eight hours of sleep in 8 minutes of charging. Charging is therefore 30% faster than it was with its predecessor. To be precise, the 40mm version of the watch is equipped with a 284mAh and the 44mm version with a 410mAh battery. Given the tested smaller version of the watch, there is no need to expect any miracles here, on the other hand, the smaller display also eats less. But you can spend the day and night comfortably, even during an hour's activity with GPS on + classic notification checks and measurement of body values.

Speaking of measurements, there is no difference here compared to the functions described in the model Galaxy Watch5 Pro, because both models have the same options. Here, too, you will find the Samsung BioActive Sensor, which was introduced in the series for the first time Galaxy Watch4, which uses a single chip with a unique design, and which has a triple function - it functions as an optical heart rate sensor, an electrical heart rate sensor, and a bioelectrical resistance analysis tool at the same time. Blood oxygen saturation or the current stress level is therefore a matter of course, as well as blood pressure measurement, EKG, etc. However, monitoring of the regeneration phase after physical activity has also been added. Here too you will find a not very active thermometer.

Worth it if you don't have last year's model

Samsung didn't have much of a choice. He had to come up with a new generation, otherwise he would lose sales. In addition, he adhered to the motto: "Don't fix what isn't broken." But we can definitely say that he did well. Galaxy Watch5 thus have all the advantages of their previous model, which they improve in all respects, while there are really few complaints.

Besides, the price is also nice. The 40mm model starts at 7 CZK, while the version with LTE is available for 490 CZK. If you go for a larger model, the prices are 8 and 490 CZK, respectively. Model Galaxy Watch5 Pro then costs CZK 11 or CZK 990 with LTE. So this is the best thing you currently have for your phone Galaxy you can buy, especially with regard to truly smart watches. Of course, you can also go for other products, but that very smartness, especially with Garmin watches, is highly questionable.
