At the beginning of August, Samsung presented new generations of its folding devices. Galaxy Although the Fold4 is more equipped, it is also more expensive. For many, it may have more potential Galaxy From Flip4. Samsung didn't venture into any wilderness, and took only a small evolutionary path, which nevertheless makes the device a great product.

It's a proven strategy. If something succeeds, subtle evolutionary steps are more desirable than another drastic product redesign. Apple this has been going on for many years, and other manufacturers have also understood that this is really the ideal path. So when Samsung tested the very design of the device on the first (and actually the second) Flip, the Z Flip3 already fixed all its ills so that the Z Flip4 could improve everything that could be improved even more. So here we have a super powerful and compact device that can really impress at first glance.

Compact device with a large display

The clear advantage of the Z Flip is its size, which is due to its construction. When you consider that it hides a 6,7" display and the device as such does not bother you in any way in your pocket, it is a completely different trend of ever-increasing tablets, whether in presentation Galaxy S22 Ultra, Galaxy From Fold4 or iPhones with the nickname Max. Specifically, it is FHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X, which Samsung continues to call Infinity Flex Display. The resolution is 2640 x 1080 and the aspect ratio is 22:9. There is also an adaptive refresh rate from one to 120 Hz. And that's definitely cool. Samsung says the internal display is 20% thicker than the one it used in the 3rd generation Flip.

So that you can at least check notifications even when closed, there is also an external 1,9" Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 260 x 512 pixels. It shows how Samsung thinks and imagines certain procedures. The interface of the external display is the same as. Galaxy Watch4 to Watch5. You control it practically the same, and the same informace will also show after a certain gesture. It even offers the same graphics. So if you use a Samsung watch, you can perfectly match your wrist with your pocket.

Now that we've nailed down the size, it's a good idea to add the actual proportions of the entire device. Folded, the Flip measures 71,9 x 84,9 x 17,1 mm, the last being the device's thickness number at the hinge. On the other hand, the thickness is 15,9 mm. And yes, this is a bit of a problem. But it is logical that if you want to bend the device, you will naturally double the thickness (or more). It's a pity that the two halves do not fit together completely when closed and there is a gap between them. Not only is it quite a design fail, but mainly you get dust in the space between the two halves and there is a risk of damaging the soft display. But more on that later.

The unfolded device then measures 71,9 x 165,2 x 6,9 mm, while the thickness, on the other hand, reminds us of the times when many manufacturers chased after its lowest value before giving up on it. Technologies have advanced, but they haven't shrunk much, especially in the area of cameras, where they grow disproportionately above the back of the device. But it's not as bad with the Flip as it is with the phones of its own stable, especially Galaxy S, or in the case of iPhones. The weight of the smartphone is 183 g, the frame is Armor Aluminum, there is also Gorilla Glass Victus+, so of course not for the internal display.

The cameras are better, but not the best

There are still two cameras, that is if we are talking about the main ones. It is a 12MPx ultra-wide camera sf/2,2, pixel size 1,12 uM and a 123˚ angle of engagement. But the more interesting one is the 12MP wide-angle camera with Dual Pixel AF, OIS, f/1,8, pixel size 1,8 uM and an angle of engagement of 83˚.

Well, it's not the top, but it's not supposed to be the top. It's clear that there's a telephoto lens missing, but that's missing from a lot of mid-range and upper-mid range phones. For a relatively illogical reason, manufacturers keep stuffing useless "ultra-wide" cameras into their phones, which erase the sides even on the iPhonech, and you will rarely use the resulting photos. But OK, he's here, if you want to take pictures with him you can.

Photos taken with Galaxy The Flip4 looks noticeably better compared to its predecessor. The results capture fine detail with decent contrast and color. Samsung's aggressive post-processing is evident because it adds a lot to the colors, but luckily it doesn't look artificial or unrealistic. Night photos have also improved, in which there is still at least some light.

The front camera is 10MPx sf/2,2, with a pixel size of 1,22 μm and an angle of view of 80˚. But basically, it is more suitable for video calls than selfie photos, because the main camera offers better quality and it is not really a problem to take self-portraits with it closed.

A speedster that doesn't stop

Samsung ditches Exynos and puts Qualcomm to the puzzle. However, since Europe is the market where Samsung is currently sending Exynos, this is an advantage for us. So here we have the 4nm octa-core Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and we couldn't have asked for anything better. Everything flies as it should, so everything you prepare for Flip will be handled in the shortest possible time. You won't experience any lags or stutters when browsing the user interface. Multitasking works like a charm. Hardware and software work in perfect harmony, resulting in a better user experience. Since the new Z Flip4 doesn't have a microSD card slot, it's nice to see that Samsung now offers 512GB of internal storage as an option. Customers can also choose from the basic variant of 128 and the middle variant of 256 GB.

Galaxy Z Flip3 has a 3mAh battery, the new one has 300mAh, and this is mainly due to the reduction of the hinge. Of course, it still does not contain any spring, so you have to set it to the desired position yourself. The reduced joint is therefore one of the small novelties that the 3th generation brought. Don't expect miracles from it, but everyone will get a day, a day and a half for a normal user and two days for someone who uses the phone only as a phone. But maybe the Z Flip700 doesn't deserve that because it's not "just" a phone. There is also super-fast charging, where you can reach 4% capacity in half an hour. You must have at least a 4W adapter for that. Then it's the Samsung standard, i.e. fast 50W wireless charging and reverse 25W wireless charging.

Groove and foil, does it matter or doesn't matter

Na Galaxy Z Flip 4 and of course Z Fold 4 are two very controversial elements. The first is a groove in the display that indicates the area of its fracture. Then there is the film that covers the entire flexible display. You can forgive the first very easily, but you can have considerable problems with the second, and it's not just a question of appearance, when dirt catches on the edges of the foil. Of course, these elements are also present in previous generations, so take this as a fact, but at the same time as the reviewer's opinion. And since reviews are subjective, this view has its place here.

What is a definite problem with flexible devices is simply their cover film, present here for a simple reason - so that in case of damage, you can only replace it, and not the entire display. However, the film does not reach the sides of the display, so you can see a clear transition, which is not only unsightly, but also holds a lot of dirt, which you simply do not want in the case of such an elegant device as the Flip. And that's even considering the front camera, which has a foil cut out around it, and you practically can't get dirt out of this place other than by rinsing the phone with water. So it is better to take your selfies with the main cameras closed, which has already been mentioned.

It's rather silly that the foil is doomed to certain replacement. Maybe not in a year, but in two you will have to have it replaced because it will just peel off. You can't do it yourself, you have to go to a service center. And you just don't want that. The foil itself is quite soft. We haven't really tried the various nail digging tests, but you can find many tests on YouTube that show this. However, it is true that you don't have much chance of damaging the film/display, because it is still only covered by its construction. However, it is necessary to add that all those who use protective glass and film on their devices do not actually have to mind this at all.

What the competition then mocks the Flips and Folds for is the groove in their flexible display. Strangely enough, this element bothers me a lot less. Yes, it can be seen and felt, but it doesn't really matter. It doesn't matter in the system, web, apps, anywhere. It's actually fun, especially in Flex mode, or any device opening that isn't a full 180 degrees. In this case, you can access Samsung's game very easily and consider the slot as an integral part of the device.

More and more features and options

Here we have IPX8, which corresponds to test conditions up to a depth of 1,5 m in fresh water for 30 minutes. Samsung itself states that it is not recommended to use the phone while swimming in the sea or pool. Why? Because Samsung lost their pants on it in Australia. It should also be noted that the phone is not dustproof, so be careful about the joint space.

Then there's 5G, LTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/ax, Bluetooth v5.2, accelerometer, barometer, gyroscope, geomagnetic sensor, hall sensor, presence sensor, light sensor, so the classics , which is supplemented by Samsung Knox and Knox Vault, DeX is missing. Two SIMs are supported, one physical Nano SIM and one eSIM. The device then runs on Androidu 12 with the One UI 4.1.1 user interface, which is based on many interesting features intended for Samsung's foldable device.

Galaxy Z Flip4 is sold in grey, purple, gold and blue. The price is CZK 27 for the variant with 490 GB of RAM/8 GB of internal memory, CZK 128 for the version with 28 GB of RAM/990 GB of memory, and CZK 8 for the version with 256 GB of RAM and 31 GB of internal memory. But it is still true that you can get up to 990 redemption bonus and Samsung insurance on the Z Flip8 Care+ for 1 year free.

The new product is a more perfect version of last year's model, when it was not improved in any drastic way, but mainly purposefully. The device is thus more universal, and above all, to a large extent, it solved the pressing problems of its predecessor. If you didn't know yet if you were going to jump into this segment of smartphones, it is Galaxy Z Flip4 clearly the best argument for why to finally swing.
