MediaTek, whose Dimensity chipsets have recently appeared in more and more smartphones of various brands, has launched a new mid-range chip called Dimensity 1080. It is the successor to the popular Dimensity 920 chipset.

Dimensity 1080 has two powerful Cortex-A78 processor cores with a clock speed of 2,6 GHz and six economical Cortex-A55 cores with a frequency of 2 GHz. It is almost the same configuration as the Dimensity 920, with the difference that the successor's two powerful cores run 100 MHz faster. Like its predecessor, the predecessor is also manufactured using a 6nm process. Graphics operations are handled by the same GPU, i.e. Mali-G68 MC4.

The major improvement that the Dimensity 1080 brings over its predecessor is the support for up to 200MPx cameras, which is rare for a mid-range chip (the Dimensity 920 has a maximum of 108 MPx, the same as Samsung's current Exynos 1280 mid-range chip). The chipset also supports – like its predecessor – 120Hz displays and Bluetooth 5.2 and Wi-Fi 6 standards.

Judging by the above, the Dimensity 1080 is not a full-fledged successor to the Dimensity 920, but rather a slightly improved version of it. It should appear in the first smartphones in the coming months, while we can expect them to be representatives of brands such as Xiaomi, Realme or Oppo.
