Unlike the external screen of the series Galaxy The Z Fold, which actually works like a normal smartphone (albeit a very narrow smartphone), has the outermost display of the series Galaxy Z Flip's functionality is noticeably more limited. Even though it improved again in the last series, the fact remains that Galaxy You need to open Z Flip to use it as a phone.

The so-called "cover" display Galaxy Z Flip lets you check notifications, toggle features like Wi-Fi, sound, and camera flash, and add a few select widgets (like favorite contacts, timer, etc.). You also have the option to use it as a camera viewfinder to better compose your selfies and capture them with the better rear cameras instead of the inferior front camera. Its main advantage is that it can look a lot like yours Galaxy Watch4/Watch5. But the advantages rather end there.

The option to turn off the external display is missing

The small size of the external display means I rarely ever use it. There are actually only two things that it is ideal for. The first is pausing and resuming audio playback, but even that happens rather rarely (especially if you have Galaxy Watch). Secondly, it's about checking the time and whether you have pending notifications. I basically open the phone for everything, including the subsequent handling of notifications, because their overview is rather confusing on a small display and is only useful for knowing which ones have come to you.

However, the fact that I don't use the external display much isn't the main reason I'd want to be able to turn it off completely, nor does it mean it's inherently bad. It's more likely accidental touches when I have my phone in my pocket. Even with the case and glass in place, the external display of the Z Flip 4 in your pockets activates by itself. Of course, these accidental touches then cause everything possible - from playing music to changing the wallpaper.

For some reason, the accidental touch protection feature that prevents the display from activating when the device is in a dark place (such as in a pocket or bag) does not work with an external display Galaxy So good from Flip4. In fact, it looks like it doesn't touch the cover display at all, meaning you can never be sure what's going to happen when you have the phone in your pocket.

Possible Solution

Of course, there are many factors that can influence this. But there are also obvious software solutions. One of them is the “double-tap screen to wake” feature, which is included in almost every Samsung smartphone Galaxy. However, this is another area where Samsung hasn't thought ahead with its foldable devices: disabling the feature affects both displays, not just one or the other.

After that, you can completely remove all present widgets, even if you will inadvertently change the main screen area all the time and lose the convenient switching of the music being played. Samsung can also simply improve its accidental touch protection algorithm accordingly, or add the option to turn it off completely.

But perhaps the best solution would be elsewhere - to make a flexible phone Galaxy And Flip, which will be cheaper and more accessible thanks to the absence of an external display. Or return the solution from the first one Galaxy From Flip, when such a device could be called, for example Galaxy From Flip4 FE.
