In May of this year, we expected Google to at least hint at its flexible future. It didn't even happen when the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro were officially unveiled in early October, but many analysts still say Google is hard at work on its first foldable phone. Now it has surfaced that this upcoming model should use Samsung displays.

According to the leaker @Za_Raczke Google's flexible phone is codenamed Felix. As the website states 91mobiles, so Felix should use displays supplied by none other than Samsung. And this means above all that these devices will have a lot in common and at the same time they will compete directly with each other.

Cooperation pays off

The Pixel Fold will reportedly use both an external and a foldable display from Samsung, with the latter panel supporting a maximum brightness level of up to 1200 nits – just like its Galaxy From Fold4. The foldable screen used by Google can have a resolution of 1840 x 2208 pixels and dimensions of 123 mm x 148 mm. Refresh rate details are still unclear, but the panel could support 120Hz.

The collaboration between Samsung and Google on the concept of foldable devices is no surprise. After all, the system Android They developed the 12L together after Samsung committed to releasing at least one foldable device using such a system every year for the next few years. Samsung has kept its promise, allowing the folding phone format to emerge, and Google may soon use the knowledge gained while developing the system Android 12L for your own purposes. As for availability, the Pixel Fold/Felix could be introduced as early as Q1 2023.

A segment must grow or it will die

If Google actually uses Samsung's display, it will confirm the concept's success. Since the notch in the display and the cover film of the internal display will probably be present again, these technological "limitations" may begin to be taken as an integral part of such a solution. In addition, if the presentation of the Pixel Fold really takes place, it will mean another global distribution of such a device, which is not only intended for the Chinese market, and which can mean supporting the growth of the segment.

Of course, Google's flexible device would use its Tensor chip and photography equipment, presumably from the Pixel 7, so it would be a high-end device. More players need to enter the market. Xiaomi, which does not distribute flexible devices outside of China, should finally catch on, which is a great shame, because it is the third largest smartphone manufacturer with great potential to expand the segment. If he ever jumps into it, but also Apple, is largely unknown.
