According to market watchers, the smartphone segment this year saw its third-worst quarter in terms of global shipments since 2014. The market fell 9% year-on-year, marking the third consecutive quarterly decline. Samsung remained at its head, followed by companies Apple, Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo. This was reported by an analytical company Canalys.

Samsung has Apple are the only smartphone manufacturers to increase their market share in terms of shipments in the third quarter of this year. The Korean giant's share increased year-on-year by one percentage point to 22%, the Cupertino one by three percentage points to 18%.

The share of all other major smartphone players was either stagnant or declining. Xiaomi held its own with 14 percent, Oppo fell a percentage point to 10% and Vivo lost two percentage points to 9%.

One of the reasons the smartphone market hasn't fallen more than 9% year-over-year is because Samsung and some other manufacturers have been offering various deals and discounts over the past few quarters, and they haven't raised prices as much. This trend may continue for the rest of the year, especially as the selling season approaches. According to analysts, consumers who have put off buying new phones this year will have the opportunity to save significantly on smartphones and bundles during the fourth quarter sales season. Demand in this year's final quarter is expected to be "slow but steady."
