At the height of the coronavirus pandemic, Google Maps introduced a new layer that allowed users to track the number of current cases of COVID-19 and the trend in a given area. It has since added special checkboxes for businesses that have taken precautions against the spread of the disease. Currently, however, the infection is receding, and with Google's move, it can be said that it is ending.

Without fanfare or any promotion, Google updated its official page "What's new in Google Maps related to the COVID-19 pandemic," which mentions at the very bottom:

“In 2020, we published the COVID-19 layer to convey to people informace on the number of cases of covid-19 infection in individual areas. Since then, many people around the world have gained access to vaccinations, tests and other means against covid-19. Their information needs have also changed.

Due to declining user numbers, the COVID-19 layer is no longer available on Google Maps for mobile and web as of September 2022. However, the latest important ones are still available in Google Search informace about covid-19, such as new variants, vaccination, testing, prevention, etc. In the Maps you will continue to find, for example, testing and vaccination centers."

Of course, Google cannot declare that the pandemic is officially over, nor can governments or anyone else. The number of cases may have decreased in part due to the distribution of vaccines, but health authorities have also redefined the conditions for reporting people with COVID-19, and in general, patients themselves no longer handle any reports. The disease will probably still be here with us, regardless of vaccinations and the procedures of governments and authorities. But the good news is that it's on the decline, for whatever reason.
