This week, the company held a celebration for the 53rd founding of Samsung Electronics at Samsung Digital City in Suwon. However, the annual event was held quietly as South Korea mourns the Itaewon accident that killed 155 people during Halloween celebrations. The ceremony was attended by various high-ranking executives, including Vice Chairman Han Jong-hee and President Kyung Kye-hyun.

Han Jong-hee said in his speech that Samsung will strive to create new business opportunities in the artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), metaverse and robotics segments to accelerate the company's growth. However, Chairman Lee Jae-yong, who was recently promoted to the post, did not attend the event. Only a few months ago, he was pardoned by the South Korean president and released from prison.

Samsung Electronics was founded in South Korea in January 1969, but it officially chose November 1 as its foundation day because it was the day it merged with its semiconductor company in 1988. Samsung may be known for its smartphones and TVs, but much of its revenue comes from memory chips and contract chip manufacturing.

The South Korean firm also held its 54th "extraordinary" general meeting of shareholders, where two new outside directors were appointed: Heo Eun-nyeong and Yoo Myung-hee. The former is a professor of energy resource engineering at Seoul National University. The other is a former trade minister and deputy minister responsible for negotiating free trade agreements.
