Although Samsung Display is experimenting with various forms and use cases for its cutting-edge folding display technology, it is said to be uninterested in developing commercial "rolling" phones. In this regard, Chinese manufacturers may be the first to break into this form factor. Will this be a problem for Samsung? It doesn't look like it.

CEO and senior analyst of UBI Research, Yi Choong-hoon, se he believes, that the folding and sliding phone markets will overlap. But this, on the other hand, is said to make it difficult for sliding phones to create their own market. And for this reason, it seems that Samsung is not interested in sliding phones. This is simply because "puzzles" will be competition for "sliders" and vice versa.

One of the reasons Samsung can continue to focus on its flexible form factor instead of exploring sliding devices is that its tried-and-true design already seems less complicated, which means more consumer-friendly. People are actually quite familiar with its form factor resembling a book or "shell". It's worth noting that LG had a foldable phone (almost) ready called the LG Rollable. However, the company withdrew from the mobile market before it could launch it. If that didn't happen, Samsung would certainly not be the first in this design.

Chinese manufacturers may never catch up to Samsung

Although several Chinese OEMs have tried to challenge Samsung's dominance in the burgeoning foldable phone market by releasing their own foldable phones to compete with it, their efforts may be futile, the analyst further claimed. “Samsung Display has secured unrivaled competitiveness, especially in the area of related patents and manufacturing know-how. It will not be easy for Chinese rivals to directly compete with him.” However, as a way to fight against Samsung's dominant position, he further believes that Chinese manufacturers could eventually try to develop and release phones with a sliding display, where Samsung will not have a model, in order to differentiate themselves from its production and attract customers.

When it comes to exploring other form factors, Samsung may be just as reluctant to use sliding display technology for laptops. However, it may use the technology for tablets because "the barrier to entry appears to be lower than other devices." This could ultimately mean that we might see a sliding tablet from Samsung before a sliding smartphone. After all, Samsung Display is already at the Intel Innovation Keynote 2022 conference demonstrated a large 13- to 17-inch sliding screen just designed for tablets.
