Qualcomm unveiled its top-of-the-line Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, which will lead the field of phones next year Androidem. It is a clear competitor to the Dimensity 9200 and the upcoming Exynos 2300.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is built on a 4nm process with a different core configuration than last year. There is a primary Arm Cortex X3 clocked at 3,2 GHz with four economical (2,8 GHz) and three efficient cores (2 GHz). The optimization consists in the fact that two of the powerful cores support both 64 and 32-bit operations, so that even older applications can still run with it efficiently.

Of course, ray tracing is not missing

Up to 16 GB of LP-DDR5x 4200 MHz RAM is supported. Overall, according to Qualcomm, this Kryo processor is up to 35% faster, as its new microarchitecture delivers 40% more energy efficiency (compared to 8 Gen 1). The Adreno GPU offers up to 25% faster performance and 45% better energy efficiency with Vulkan 1.3 support, while "Adreno Display" features "OLED Aging Compensation" to combat image burn-in. Another highlight is hardware-accelerated ray tracing for gaming, which better simulates how light behaves in the real world, from accurate reflections to better shadows. However, it also brought the Exynos 2200 and its use is practically zero so far.

It supports 5G+5G/4GDual-SIM Dual-Active, while the FastConnect 7800 understands Wi-Fi 7 with low latency and dual Bluetooth is also present. Other features include support for two-way Snapdragon Satellite messaging. There is also audio support with dynamic head tracking. The Qualcomm AI Engine with up to 4,35 times higher artificial intelligence performance thanks to a 2 times larger tensor accelerator deserves further attention.

It features a special power delivery system that doubles the connection between the Hexagon processor and the Adreno GPU, as well as Spectra ISP for more bandwidth and lower latency. For AI tasks, a faster connection reduces reliance on DDR system memory. There is also support for the INT4 AI format for a 60% performance boost in continuous AI inference. The Sensing Hub is equipped with two AI processors for sound and other sensors with twice the performance and 50% more memory.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 also features what Qualcomm calls "Cognitive ISP," which can run real-time semantic segmentation through the camera to identify and then optimize faces, hair, clothing, sky, and other common objects in a scene. There is also support for the ISOCELL HP3 image sensor from Samsung (200 MPx) and the AV1 codec for video playback in resolutions up to 8K HDR at 60 FPS.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 should appear in smartphones by the end of 2022. Companies such as Asus ROG, Honor, iQOO, Motorola, Nubia, OnePlus, Oppo, Redmagic, Redmi, Sharp, Sony, Vivo, will use it in their solutions. Xiaomi, Xingi/Meizu, ZTE and of course also Samsung. He will fit his with it Galaxy S23, which will not be intended for the European market, because here we will probably see "only" the Exynos 2300.
