Until now, only seven emojis were available to respond to RCS messages in Google's Messages app, including a thumbs up/down, a smiley face with heart eyes, or a face with an open mouth. Now Google has started introducing the ability to respond to messages with any emoticon for some users.

In the pill panel with the previous seven emoticons, you'll now find a "plus" icon, which will display a full selection of emoticons organized by category (the same table appears when you tap the emoji icon next to the microphone in the message box, but without the tabs for GIFs and stickers). Recently used reactions will appear in the top row, but it's unclear if they will eventually replace the default seven.

As before, you can tap the emoticon that appears in the lower right corner of the message bubble to get a better look at it. This will be needed now more than ever.

Currently, the new feature appears to be available only to News beta program participants. It is not known at the moment when it will be available to all users, but we shouldn't have to wait long.
