Samsung has been buying OLED and LCD panels from BOE for several years. It uses them in some of its smartphones and TVs. However, it now looks like the Korean giant will not be buying these panels from the Chinese display giant next year.

According to The Elec website, which cites the server SamMobile, Samsung has removed BOE from its list of official suppliers, meaning it will not buy any products from the Chinese firm in 2023. The reason is said to be recent problems with the payment of license fees by the BOE. Samsung was supposed to ask the BOE to pay royalties for using the Samsung name in its marketing, but the BOE reportedly refused. Since then, Samsung should have limited the purchase of panels from BOE.

BOE's OLED panels are typically used in Samsung's affordable smartphones and mid-range models (see, for example Galaxy M52 5G), while the Korean giant uses LCD panels in its cheap TVs. Samsung should now have increased orders for these panels from CSOT and LG Display.

Various companies, including Apple and Samsung, are reducing their dependence on Chinese companies due to the current geopolitical tensions between China and the West. Recently there was a news on the airwaves that Apple stopped buying NAND chips from Chinese government-funded YMTC (Yangtze Memory Technologies). Instead, the Cupertino giant is said to buy these memory chips from Samsung and another South Korean company, SK Hynix.
