The Chinese company Huawei once very seriously threatened the dominance of Samsung in the global smartphone market. The change in its position occurred a few years ago, when the USA imposed sanctions on it, which cut it off from key technologies developed here. The one-time smartphone giant has now licensed its key mobile and wireless technologies to other brands, including Samsung, to stay afloat in the industry.

Last week, Huawei and OPPO announced that they had licensed each other's key patents, including 5G, Wi-Fi and audio-video codecs. In addition, Huawei announced that it has licensed key 5G technologies to Samsung. Although he did not provide details, the patents could relate to 5G modems in Samsung's mobile devices or 5G patents related to the telecommunications infrastructure of the Samsung Networks division.

OPPO and Samsung are among the two dozen companies that have licensed Huawei patents and technologies in recent years. Various reports claim that Huawei's revenue from patent licensing reached up to $2019 billion (about CZK 2021 billion) in 1,3-30. Samsung is Huawei's biggest partner in terms of smartphone sales and revenue.

Huawei said it was committed to long-term investment in research and development and improving its intellectual property portfolio. Last year, Huawei topped the rankings for patents granted by the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) and the European Patent Office. In the US, it ranked fifth.
