Czechs are exemplary in recycling cardboard boxes from Christmas presents. Three quarters (76%) of them use the box from the sent goods at least occasionally to send another shipment. When it comes to new TV boxes, almost four in ten (39%) keep them for later use and 4% use them to make home decorations. This follows from a survey by Samsung Electronics, in which 23 respondents from the Czech Republic participated from November 28 to 2022, 1016.

"During the Christmas holidays, almost half of Czech households see their waste volume increase by a third, and an eighth even by half. Two-thirds of this waste is paper, including cardboard boxes. That's why we were interested in how people deal with it, and we were positively surprised that a considerable number of consumers can use the box for other purposes and do not throw it in the municipal waste after one-time use," says Zuzana Mravík Zelenická, CSR manager at Samsung Electronics Czech and Slovak. According to the survey, 71,8% of respondents throw these boxes into sorted waste, 3,7% into unsorted waste, and a tenth of them burn the boxes. But one in eight (13,1%) will use them as storage spaces or as a toy for pets.

Home accessory from a TV box? Samsung can do it

A lot of cardboard boxes pass through the hands of Czechs during the Christmas holidays. Four out of ten respondents (38,9%) said that they estimated their number at one to five, a third (33,7%) even at five to ten. Less than 15% of users will use up to 15 cardboard boxes, and almost every tenth (9,3%) will use more than 15. At the same time, half of the respondents (48%) can imagine using these boxes as home accessories or even for the production of furniture. This is unimaginable for only 2% of respondents. Samsung meets these requirements with a project of special stronger cardboard boxes with pre-printed patterns, according to which the boxes can be easily cut, folded and made into home accessories.

Eco-package

In addition, he prepared a special website for customers www.samsung-ecopackage.com, where they choose a TV model, such as a QD OLED, and see what objects they can make out of its box. In particular, it is possible to make cat houses or stands for magazines or books from TV boxes, or a table under the TV or other home accessories. Each box has a QR code that directs the customer to the Samsung Eco-Package website, where they can choose what they want to make, including various animals or a rocking horse. For all TV boxes, Samsung stopped using color prints so that their production was as environmentally friendly as possible. It thus reduces the carbon footprint in the production and transport of televisions and thus contributes to the protection of the environment in general.

Weekend workshops with Drawplanet

In addition, before Christmas, Samsung is organizing two workshops for families with children in cooperation with the Prague art workshop Drawplanet, where participants will be able to try working with cardboard television boxes and make Christmas decorations from them or perhaps something larger like a design piece of furniture. "Our effort is to show that even a cardboard TV box is a quality material from which something beautiful and useful can be made. And such "upcycling" of cardboard will make you happy twice, once as a gift for a loved one and secondly as a gift for the environment. Come and try it with us," encourages Zuzana Mravík Zelenická, CSR manager.

Creative workshops will take place on Sundays, December 11 and 18, 2022, from 14 p.m. to 17 p.m. at Drawplanet. Entry for participants is free, just register on the Draw Planet website.
