Tailored mobile experiences: One UI 5 offers better personalization options

Smartphones are indispensable in today's world. Despite their small size, they hide the whole world inside. That's why Samsung created its own user interface One UI - we wanted to equip innovative hardware with an intuitive and user-friendly software system that makes it easier to control mobile devices of various types 

These days, Samsung introduced the latest version of this user interface, called One UI 5. Millions of users of the devices of the series Galaxy all over the world, new functions have become available, which, among other things, will allow them to customize the mobile experience according to their own ideas.

Use your phone however you like

The One UI 5 interface offers the richest personalization options to date – users will be able to adapt the appearance of their phone or tablet to their own ideas even more easily than in the past. It all starts with communication functions.

The new Bixby Text Call feature allows users to communicate in a way that is closest to them. For example, you can reply to a caller with a text message. Samsung's Bixby smart platform converts text to speech and communicates the message to the caller for you. The caller's voice response is then automatically converted back to text. The function can be very useful when you need to communicate with the other person, but for some reason you don't want to talk, for example in public transport or at a concert. Even in this case, you will not have to reject the call now.

Customize your phone to fit your lifestyle

During the day, your requirements for smartphone functions can change significantly. In the morning, when you get up and start a new day, you can use completely different functions than at work or during evening entertainment. And that's why there's a new Routines feature that lets you trigger a series of actions based on your usual activities. The Modes function allows users to create their own settings for different situations, from sleeping and relaxing to exercising or driving a car.

Example: when exercising, you don't want to be disturbed by notifications because you want to focus only on the music in your headphones. And when you go to sleep, you turn off all the sounds again and reduce the brightness of the display.

Other advantages of the One UI 5 user interface include a fresh new look, which makes the user experience more pleasant and easier to control. Users can enjoy, for example, simpler and more expressive icons or a simplified color scheme. Seemingly insignificant details have a great influence on the overall impression, and it is on these that we have focused a lot this time.

Notifications have also been improved – they are more intuitive, they can be easily read even at a glance, the buttons for accepting and rejecting a call on the pop-up display are also more prominent.

In addition to these changes, everyone can customize the user interface to their own ideas to a greater extent than with previous versions. The One UI 5 user interface uses, among other things, the popular Video Wallpaper from the Good Lock application, which is displayed on the locked screen. With a few taps, the video can be edited to show the most interesting moments from your experience. In addition, the appearance of the wallpaper itself, the style of the clock and the form of notifications can be changed.

A mobile experience just for you

In addition to a personalized appearance, the One UI 5 interface also includes completely new functions that increase the productivity of working with a phone or tablet. For example, the possibilities of widgets or mini-applications, which can be newly layered on top of each other, dragged between individual layers or moved left or right by touch, are significantly expanded. This significantly saves space on the home screen and facilitates its efficient use.

And as far as widgets are concerned, we must not forget the new Smart suggestions function, which also facilitates work and other activities in many ways. Based on your typical user behavior and current environment, the feature automatically suggests the use of specific applications or procedures.

Texts from images can be easily copied and pasted into a note, which is handy if you need to quickly save information from an advertising poster for an event or perhaps a phone number from a business card. The One UI 5 user interface makes it even easier compared to previous versions.

In addition, you can also control all devices connected to your smartphone in the new Connected devices menu, where you can access all functions that work on connected devices (Quick Share, Smart View, Samsung DeX, etc.). From there, you can also easily access the Auto switch Buds menu, which allows you to automatically switch the Buds headphones from one device to another.

Security and peace of mind

We understand that there is no privacy without security. In the One UI 5 user interface, security and personal data protection are therefore integrated in a clear panel, and control of all relevant parameters is much simpler than before.

The panel with the telling name Security and privacy dashboard is intentionally as simple as possible, so that it is clear at a glance how the device stands in this respect. So just take a look and you will have an overview of how secure the device is, or if there is any risk.

To ensure that private data is truly available only to you, One UI 5 includes a new notification that warns you if you are about to share a photo with potentially sensitive content (e.g. a picture of a payment card, driver's license, passport or other personal documents) .

Over the past months, we at Samsung have been working hard to make One UI 5 the best mobile experience ever. Because of this, we are thousands of model users Galaxy asked for feedback through the One UI Beta program.

Thanks to this feedback, we know that our mobile experience is what users need Galaxy really fits. As part of the event, users could try out the new interface at an early stage and tell us what they think about it and how they work with it. This year, we opened the Open Beta program for One UI 5 even earlier than in previous years, so that there is enough time for feedback and those interested can get to the user interface in real time.

Based on this feedback, we modified the look of One UI 5 in several ways. According to the wishes and observations of users, we have improved the detailed elements of the system (e.g. fluidity of gestures during personalization), but also the entire functions. Users particularly appreciated the Security Dashboard and often said they looked forward to its updates. They also really liked the new Bixby Text Call feature for making calls in challenging environments. Based on this feedback, the feature is expected to be supported in English from the beginning of next year.

Bixby Text Call is now available in Korean as of One UI 4.1.1, the English version is planned for early 2023 via One UI update.
