Google announced, that Google Maps will now work on smartwatches running the operating system Wear OS and LTE connection, even if not paired with a smartphone. It simply means that the app will now offer turn-by-turn navigation on the smartwatch Galaxy Watch4, Galaxy Watch4 Classic, Galaxy Watch5 to Galaxy Watch5 Pro, even if they are not connected to the phone.

Needless to say, an LTE-enabled smartwatch must have an active data plan for Google Maps to work independently even if your watch is not connected to your smartphone. According to Google, this Maps functionality works in standalone mode on the watch Wear LTE enabled OS useful when "you're out for a bike ride or a run and you don't want to lug around your phone, but you need help finding your way home."

Another handy feature is that if you mirror navigation from your smartphone to your smartwatch, which then disconnects from your smartphone for some reason, the watch will take over navigation from your phone so you don't lose track of Maps. That is, if you have in your watch with the system Wear OS active some data plan, you will be able to use Google Maps at any time.

Google did not reveal how the new feature on the smartwatch Wear An OS with LTE support will enable it, but we believe it will be logically through an app update in the smartwatch.
