As you probably know, still the current flagship chipset of Samsung Exynos 2200, which he developed in collaboration with AMD, supports ray tracing. It is a new method of rendering 3D graphics that calculates the movement of light rays, offering a more accurate representation of highlights, shadows and reflections. Until now, the Exynos 2200's performance in this area could not be measured because there was no benchmark. Now one has finally surfaced and revealed some unexpected results.

To the editors of the site Android Authority got our hands on a new set of In Vitro game tests from the Basemark company. They ran the benchmark on the phone Galaxy S22Ultra with Exynos 2200 chip and Redmagic 8 Pro with Qualcomm's latest flagship chipset Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, to see how they perform in ray tracing.

The In Vitro benchmark only runs on devices with Androidem that have hardware ray tracing support are software built on Android12 or later, support Vulkan 1.1 or later and ETC2 texture compression, and have at least 3 GB of memory.

At 1080p, the Exynos 2200 fared better, posting an average of 21,6 fps (minimum frame rate was 16,4 fps, maximum 30,3 fps). The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 recorded an average of 17,6 fps (minimum 13,3 fps, maximum 42 fps). According to the site, the test ran smoother on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 when there were fewer reflections on the screen. However, when more of them appeared, he was said to be in considerable trouble.

The site also ran a raytracing stress test that included 20 continuous In Vitro test runs. Here too, the Exynos 2200 was faster than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, averaging 16,9 fps versus 14,9 fps. This result says a lot about the Xclipse 920 graphics chip inside the Exynos 2200. Despite being a year older, it beats the Adreno 740 GPU in the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. In rasterization, however, the latest Snapdragon clearly has the upper hand.

So it looks like Samsung's ray tracing claims weren't just empty talk. Hardware ray tracing performed by the Exynos 2200 was a generation ahead of its time. It's just a shame that on Androidu there are only very few games that support ray tracing (these include, for example, Rainbow Six Mobile, Genshin Impact or Wild Rift).
