Along with the new flagship series Galaxy S23 last week, Samsung also introduced the One UI 5.1 superstructure. It brings, among other things, several useful improvements to the Gallery. Here are the most important ones.

Improved Remaster feature

The One UI 5.1 update brings an improved Remaster feature to the Gallery. It works by using AI to look for various flaws in images, which it then improves. Its improvement is that the Gallery now suggests images that it believes need improvement. It can now remaster GIFs to improve their resolution and reduce compression noise.

In addition, the improved Remaster function also removes unwanted shadows and light reflections (such as those on windows). In earlier versions of One UI, the Shadow Remover and Reflection Remover functions had to be accessed separately, but in One UI 5.1 they are already part of the Remaster button and work automatically.

Improved stories

In One UI 5.0 (or older versions), the Gallery displays only one story at a time. If you want to view multiple stories in one view, One UI 5.1 lets you pinch two fingers to view four stories at once. After that, you can pinch back to go back to the standard layout.

If you have stories in the Gallery that you view frequently, you can use the new Favorite Stories feature. You can tap the heart-shaped icon in the upper right corner of the story to add it to your favorites. One UI 5.1 also lets you jump to certain parts of the story by offering a scrollable slideshow timeline at the bottom.

Improved search functionality

One UI 5.1 lets you enter multiple search terms in Gallery to find relevant photos and videos. Additionally, you can tap on a person's face in the filter section to further narrow your search results.

The ability to find out more details about a photo or video by swiping up

One UI 5.1 now allows you to view the EXIF of images or videos in the Gallery informace, by swiping up. For photos, you will be shown the date and time they were taken, location, resolution, sensitivity, field of view, exposure, aperture, shutter speed, size, location in the system, and people visible in them.

For videos, you will then see the resolution, size, system location, duration, frames per second, video and audio codec, and GPS location. Click Edit to enable EXIF informace edit any photo or video.

Easily transform objects from photos or videos into a sticker

With One UI 5.1, you can easily turn any object from a photo into a sticker. Just find and open the desired photo in the Gallery and then long tap on any object. This part of the image will be automatically cropped by AI.

Samsung already offered the option to turn objects in a photo into a sticker in the One UI 4.1 superstructure, but users had to manually crop the desired object (more precisely, outline it). In One UI 5.1, this part of the image is automatically cropped when the user long-presses it. This feature now also works for videos. The cropped part of the photo or video can be copied to the clipboard, shared with others or saved to the Gallery.
