When Samsung announced the series in early February Galaxy S23, he has done a huge job with sustainability in mind. This "green" vibe seems to have turned from a motivation into a trend. "We don't add a charger to the packaging to reduce e-waste and carbon emissions from shipping, we've doubled the amount of recycled parts in our phones, this case was made from coke bottles." But there is also a dark side to the matter.

One important aspect that Samsung is rather successfully ignoring is reuse. Galaxy The S23 Ultra is 99,5% the same dimensions as the Galaxy S22 Ultra, and that Galaxy You can even put the S23 Ultra in a case designed for the S22 Ultra. But as you can imagine, even though the placement of the cameras and volume and power buttons are only a few millimeters off, it's enough to make you need a new case instead.

It's not just Samsung, it's Apple, which practically just enlarges its iPhone camera module. But you can use the new case for the old generations as well, because it has a larger cut-out, so the older generation will fit without any problems. Galaxy The S23 Ultra is practically indistinguishable from the previous generation with the naked eye, even so it is physically slightly different. Another curvature of the display does not matter, only the displacement of the lenses does. So with a new phone with an almost identical look, you have to buy a new case as well. Not only is it another expense for your wallet, but it's also a burden on the planet.

Where with him?

Even if you then use a return program, they completely ignore the cases, packaging and covers, so they stay at home. You can try to sell them, but you will probably fail and just throw them away. And the planet is crying. But the truth may also be that covers are simply poorly recycled, while phones are much better. These are perfectly divided into individual parts so that important materials, especially precious metals, can be used from them. Given how "cheap" plastic is compared to metals and electronic components, there is clearly less incentive for most e-waste programs to try to properly sort and recycle any casings.

We're talking about plastics, but there's also leather, wood, magnets, adhesives, etc. If the cases fit both phone models, users would have twice the choice, case manufacturers and sellers could offer twice the product selection, and Samsung could offer a truly ecological solution. The situation with the basic series is different, because there the physical proportions have really changed, but the Ultra just "dirts" the planet.

Modern smartphones are quite durable. Galaxy The S23 offer the most durable Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on both sides, their frame is reinforced with Armor Aluminum, so they should be able to withstand something. But are you going to risk it, or are you going to buy a cover and possibly even a protective glass anyway? It is of course your choice.
